The Croatian national football team held a dress rehearsal in Portugal before the EURO 2024 in Germany and recorded its historic first victory over the host team.

After the preliminary victory over North Macedonia in Rijeka (3:0), Vatreni played a friendly match against one of the favorites of the European Championship, Portugal, before arriving at their camp in Germany’s Neuruppin on Sunday.

On the road in Lisbon, Croatia took an early lead, already in the eighth minute, thanks to the realized penalty kick by captain Modrić. In the first half, the home team could get the ball into the net a few more times, given that Croatia created a few more good chances on the wings of an upbeat Gvardiol.

Portugal entered the second half with several new players, pressed and quickly equalized through Jota. However, the Vatreni responded best in the 56th minute – Mario Pašalić hit the bar, and Budimir put the ball into the net for 2:1.

By the end of the game, both had several chances to score, but the result did not change, which was the first victory for the Flames over Portugal, in the eighth match between them.
